General Home Cleaning Tips for a Clean and Serene Home – Part Two

Updated: Aug 22

In our previous post, we shared four tips to get you started on a clean and serene home. These included establishing a cleaning routine, decluttering regularly, one room or task at a time, and gathering the right cleaning supplies. This sets the base for achieving your goals and makes them easier to accomplish. In this post, we share four more valuable tips to help you achieve your goal. Let’s dive into part two!

Work from Top to Bottom, Left to Right

Start from the top and work your way down when cleaning a room. Dust ceiling fans, light fixtures, and high surfaces first, then move on to eye-level surfaces. You may find it helpful to start near the entrance of the room, dust your way in a clockwise rotation (or from left to right) along the perimeter, and finish with the center of the room. Finish by cleaning floors so any dust or debris that falls during the process gets picked up last. This method prevents dust and debris from settling on already-cleaned surfaces, prevents you from re-cleaning areas, and ensures maximum efficiency.

Pay Attention to High-Touch Areas for a Sanitized Space

In busy households, some areas tend to get dirtier faster than others. High-touch areas like doorknobs, light switches, remote controls, and faucets harbor germs and bacteria. Regularly disinfect these surfaces to maintain a hygienic home, especially during flu seasons or times of illness.

Clean kitchen countertops, sinks, and appliances to prevent bacteria buildup. In the bathroom, regularly disinfect surfaces, scrub the toilet, and keep the shower and bathtub clean. Regularly cleaning these spaces will keep your home tidy and prevent dirt and grime from spreading to other areas.

Utilize Natural Cleaning Solutions

Consider using natural cleaning solutions for a safer and eco-friendly approach. Baking soda and vinegar are two natural and affordable cleaning powerhouses. Baking soda can be used to scrub surfaces, deodorize carpets, and remove stains, while vinegar is excellent for cutting through grease, cleaning glass, and eliminating odors. Combining these two ingredients can create a powerful DIY cleaner without the harmful chemicals in some store-bought products.

Always take caution before you start mixing cleaning products. “Combining cleaning products can lead to the formation of noxious fumes that, in some cases, can cause serious medical harm or even death,” Kelly Johnson-Arbor, MD, FACEP, FUHM, FACMT, Medical Toxicologist, Co-Medical Director, and Interim Executive Director, National Capital Poison Center. Never combine the following chemicals!

1. Bleach and rubbing alcohol.

2. Bleach and acidic substances such as vinegar or lemon juice.

3. Bleach and ammonia.

4. Bleach and drain cleaners.

5. Two different types of drain cleaners.

6. Vinegar and hydrogen peroxide.

Take Care of Your Floors

Clean floors are vital for a tidy home.

Vacuum carpets and rugs regularly to remove dirt and allergens. And consider deep cleaning at least twice a year. This will not only enhance the appearance of your carpets but also prolong their lifespan.

For hardwood or tile floors, sweep or mop as needed, and use the appropriate cleaning products for the floor type. Vacuuming your tile before mopping will help prevent dirt particles from penetrating the grout (which is very porous) during the mopping process. Consider using doormats at entrances to minimize dirt and debris from being tracked into the house.

Well, you are almost there to achieve a clean and serene home. In our next post, we cover another four points: the kitchen, involving the family, rewards, and when to seek professional help. Until then, happy cleaning!
